The catalog is the argument. Piñata (2014) with Madlib — one of the ten best rap albums of the decade. Every beat a vintage soul crate-dig. Every Gibbs verse a study in how to be simultaneously cold and technically precise. The combination shouldn't work as perfectly as it does. It does.
Bandana (2019) — the follow-up. Different from Piñata in texture, identical in quality. The Madlib partnership is one of the most productive creative relationships in modern rap history and neither man has ever overstayed the welcome.
Alfredo (2020) with The Alchemist — won the Grammy for Best Rap Album. Which the field respects while noting that it took until 2020 for the industry to formally acknowledge what the streets already knew. The Alchemist beats hit different when Freddie is on them. The chemistry is real.
