Black culture is not a genre. it is not a trend. it is not a moment in the cultural calendar. it is the operating system that the rest of the culture runs on — often without credit, frequently without acknowledgment, consistently without adequate compensation. the field has logged this for decades. the receipts exist.

jazz was called noise before it was called art. hip-hop was called a fad before it was called the dominant cultural force of the last forty years. the pattern is consistent: Black culture creates, the institution ignores, then the institution appropriates, then the institution names it after itself. the field does not participate in this cycle. what Kendrick Lamar represents — and what makes him the right lens for this table — is the convergence of all the threads at once.
