MAUI. THE VOLCANO. THE LAST CONCERT.

July 30, 1970. The slopes of Haleakalā — the dormant volcano on Maui, Hawaii. A free outdoor concert organized around the Rainbow Bridge Occult Research Commune. No stage. No proper PA. The audience sat on the earth of a volcano and Jimi Hendrix played above them.

He died seven weeks later. September 18, 1970. London. He was 27 years old. This concert is one of the last full concert documents we have.

The film directed by Chuck Wein was released in 1971, posthumously. It is psychedelic, nonlinear, counterculture. It is also the closest thing to a real document of what Hendrix was at the end — playing on volcanic rock in Hawaii with the full power of the Experience, for free, for whoever showed up. No envelopes. No industry. Just the guitar and the mountain.

The setlist that day: Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) · In From the Storm · Hear My Train A Comin' · Foxy Lady · Purple Haze · Voodoo Child (Slight Return). The field notes that every song on that list is a statement. He didn't coast on the last concert. He brought everything.

LUCILLE.

Lucille Jeter was born in 1925. She married Al Hendrix and they had James Marshall Hendrix on November 27, 1942 in Seattle. By all accounts Lucille was beautiful — vibrant, a great dancer, the kind of energy that lit up a room. Jimi got it from her. He knew it. He carried her everywhere he went.

She was also struggling. Alcohol. A marriage that was fracturing. She and Al divorced in 1951 when Jimi was eight years old. After the divorce, Lucille mostly disappeared from his life. She wasn't there. Not in the consistent way a child needs. She was present sometimes, gone others, and the unpredictability of it was its own kind of wound.

She died in 1958. Jimi was fifteen years old. Cirrhosis of the liver. He was not told immediately. When he found out, he was not allowed to attend the funeral. Al Hendrix had sold Lucille's engagement ring to cover the burial costs. The field marks this without commentary — some things don't need analysis. They just need to be recorded.

Jimi carried his mother for the rest of his life — which was twelve more years. He carried her in the music. In the flowers he wore. In the way he moved. In "Castles Made of Sand." She is in everything he made.

CASTLES MADE OF SAND.

From Axis: Bold as Love (1967). Track 12. Written by Jimi Hendrix. Produced by Chas Chandler. The guitar is in reverse on the outro — he literally ran the tape backward. To go back. To undo. To return to something that was already gone.

The song has three verses. Each one is about a different person whose dream — whose castle — is built on sand. The tide comes. It washes away. And so castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually.

THE COUPLE · THE ARGUMENT · THE MORNING AFTER

A husband and wife fighting violently. She threatens to leave. He threatens his own life. Neither follows through. The next morning the sun rises and they act like nothing happened — "down the road they did go" — the argument dissolved, the threats forgotten, the castle of their conflict washed away. The damage stays even when the moment doesn't. That's the sand. The foundation that looks solid until the water comes.

THE LITTLE INDIAN BRAVE · THE BIG DREAM · THE ACCIDENT

A young boy — a little Indian brave — who "one day fought a big war." He had dreams. A warrior. A chief. He was going to be someone. Then an accident. He's crippled. The dream is gone. The castle washed away before it was ever finished. Hendrix doesn't editorialize. He just shows you the before and the after. The boy who was going to be a chief, and what happened to that.

THE LITTLE GIRL · THE GOLDEN WINGED SHIP · LUCILLE

A little girl, "in a tragic way," was sure she would die on her next birthday. She drew a mermaid on the back of a dollar bill and said "this is my last night." Then — a golden winged ship passed by in the sky. She was saved. The castles made of sand slip into the sea, eventually — but not yet. Not tonight.

The field reads this verse as Lucille. The little girl who was sure she would not make it. The mother who appeared and disappeared like a ship in the sky. The golden winged ship: there for a moment. Then gone. The backward guitar at the end — Jimi running time backward — is the most honest note in the song. You can't un-lose your mother. But you can reverse the tape and hear the sound of trying.

"and so castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually." — three words did the whole work. eventually. not immediately. not never. eventually. that's grief with a timeline. that's jimi hendrix in 1967 knowing what he already knew. 925.

The reversed guitar outro is not a production trick. It is a direction of travel. Forward is the song. Backward is where he wanted to go. The music flowing in reverse is Jimi Hendrix trying to get back to something — to someone — he never got to properly say goodbye to. The tape can go backward. Time cannot. The guitar understood this.

The Rainbow Bridge concert is the frequency HendrixTekFIW carries. Volcanic ground. Free admission. Everything at maximum. Weeks from the end and still playing like the circuit was wide open. That is the Sagittarius arrow — already gone before the bow lowers. Already past the target before anyone counted the shots.
