He does this as a Libra — which is to say, as a person whose entire psychological architecture was shaped by the position of Venus relative to the Earth at the moment of his birth, in a system he has described as "not even wrong."
The field has noted the irony. The field is going to stay here for a while.

Libra is the sign of the scales. The symbol is justice, balance, the weighing of all sides. At its highest, Libra produces the person who genuinely considers every angle before arriving at a position. At its shadow, Libra produces the person who performs the gesture of balance while having already decided — and who uses the performance of fairness as rhetorical authority.
NDT performs balance constantly. He says "on one hand" and "on the other hand" and "to be fair" and "in the interest of completeness." He is very good at the gesture. He has never applied this gesture to astrology. He does not say "on one hand, there are 2,000 years of symbolic framework with demonstrable psychological utility; on the other hand, it is not predictive in the empirical sense." He says: pseudoscience. Full stop. The scales do not move for this one.
That is not a Libra at peak form. That is a Libra whose Venus needs the crowd to agree with him.

The social architecture of Neil deGrasse Tyson is: make a strong declarative statement about science being correct, receive the agreement of people who trust scientists, repeat. This loop is maximally rewarding for a Venus-ruled Libra — social approval, intellectual authority, and the feeling of being the wisest person in the room, all in one transaction.
Astrology is a safe target. The scientific community agrees with him. Twitter agrees with him. Reddit agrees with him. He is not being brave when he calls astrology pseudoscience. NDT's favorite rhetorical move against astrology is the Ophiuchus gambit. He says: the Earth's axis has precessed since the Babylonians established the zodiac. The constellations have shifted. Your sign is wrong. There is a 13th constellation, Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer, that the sun transits through. Therefore astrology is built on a false map. He delivers this with the confidence of a man who has ended the conversation.

HE IS CRITIQUING A SYSTEM HE HAS NOT STUDIED.
Western astrology — the system he is critiquing — uses the tropical zodiac. The tropical zodiac is not based on the physical location of constellations. It is based on the Earth's relationship to the Sun through the seasons. Aries begins at the spring equinox. Libra begins at the autumn equinox. The system is anchored to seasonal cycles and the solar relationship to Earth. Precession does not affect it.
Vedic astrology — the Indian system — uses the sidereal zodiac, which does track actual constellation positions and therefore does account for precession through a correction called the ayanamsa. It produces different sign placements and has its own internal consistency.
The Ophiuchus argument does not apply to Western astrology and is only partially relevant to Vedic astrology. NDT is correcting a system using an objection that does not address what the system actually claims. He has done this in public, repeatedly, to millions of people, without clarifying the distinction. A physicist who did this in his own field would be asked to retract the statement. The field is asking.
The irony of the Ophiuchus gambit is that it requires him to know something about astrology to deploy it correctly, and he has chosen not to know that thing. He has chosen the version of the argument that sounds most conclusive without being accurate. This is not what astrophysicists do with data. This is what debaters do with rhetoric. His Libra is showing.

THE POP SCIENCE PROBLEM.
NDT is not primarily a research scientist. He is primarily a science communicator. His PhD is in astrophysics from Columbia (1991). His research output is real but modest compared to his media presence. His primary professional contribution for the last 25 years has been explaining science to people who are not scientists — which is valuable, necessary work. The field does not diminish it.
The field does ask: what is the basis of his authority to dismiss astrology as a system? His expertise is astrophysics — the physical behavior of stars, galaxies, black holes, dark matter. Astrology is a symbolic framework for understanding human psychology through celestial correspondence. These are different fields. His PhD does not confer expertise in the latter. Calling astrology pseudoscience from the position of astrophysicist is like a cardiologist dismissing psychotherapy because "feelings aren't measurable." Adjacent expertise is not the same as expertise.

He does it with the energy of a man who cannot sit through a film without the physics bothering him.
The field notes: he has never tweeted a correction about his own Libra placement. He has never said "actually, as a Libra, I am Venus-ruled, which means my sense of intellectual authority is partially a social approval mechanism, and the reader should weight my public pronouncements on astrology accordingly." He has not run this analysis. He runs every other analysis. He is the unexamined variable in his own data set.

Most physicists go by two names. Neil Tyson. Simple. Clean. He hyphenates "deGrasse" — his mother's maiden name — giving himself three names in public contexts. Three names is a branding decision. It creates distinction, memorability, authority, and a specific cadence that makes you sound like someone who should be listened to. This is a completely correct and intelligent choice for a science communicator who wants to build a public profile.

This is the good faith question. Not: was he born there? Yes. He was. The birth data is real. The question is: does he engage with what a system does with that data in good faith? Has he read the argument? Has he spent an afternoon with a serious astrology text the way he would spend an afternoon with a paper that challenges his priors in astrophysics? Has he engaged with the Gauquelin data, with the Jungian corpus, with the 2,000-year symbolic tradition on its own terms before dismissing it?
He has not. He has engaged with the caricature. He engages with "my horoscope said I'd meet a tall stranger." He does not engage with the actual philosophical claim: that the position of celestial bodies at birth corresponds symbolically — not causally, symbolically — to patterns in personality and experience that have been documented across cultures for millennia. Good faith engagement requires actually engaging. He skipped that part.

NDT on astrology: hears "pseudoscience," finds the crowd agrees, brings up Ophiuchus (wrong zodiac system), collects approval, exits. He gave us the birth coordinates and refused to let them be read. He handed the field the raw data and then blocked the analysis. That is not skepticism. That is not science. That is a man protecting something — his position, his brand, his Libra need to be the authority in the room — by refusing to let the room contain a conversation he cannot control.

He dismisses astrology — and when pressed, when someone actually pushes back with the tropical zodiac argument or the psychological validity argument or the 2,000-year persistence argument — he repeats himself louder and counts on the crowd to drown out the challenger. That is not a defended position. That is social volume substituting for intellectual rigor. A Libra who cannot defend a position is a Libra who never actually held one — he held the approval of people who held that position. There is a difference. The field documents it.

The bitterness is in the pivot. A man confident in his position does not need to pivot — he engages. A man who has built his identity on a position and cannot have that identity threatened pivots, deflects, and then finds the nearest microphone where the crowd will agree with him again.
