this was not a rap song.
this was a confession that happened to have drums.
"i've got some issues that nobody can see / and all of these emotions are pouring out of me"
he opened the album with that. no warm-up. straight to the wound.
most rappers perform strength. cudi performed the absence of it.
and somehow that became the most powerful thing you could hear at 2am
driving nowhere specific, trying to figure out if you were okay.
you weren't. and neither was he. and that was the whole point.
the production by Emile — that loop, that hum —
sounded like the inside of your chest if you were really listening.
cudi wasn't rapping at you. he was thinking out loud. you just happened to be there.

every anxiety, every night terror, every conversation with god at 4am —
he gave it to the culture and the culture gave nothing back for years.

but the weight was always cudi's to carry.
