THE TIMELINE

1997

iMac G3. Jobs returns. Ive gets the call. Translucent bondi blue. The design world stops. This was real. The collaboration begins — Jobs with the vision, Ive with the form. Together: the most important design partnership in consumer technology history.

1998–2011

The run. iPod. iBook. MacBook Pro. iPhone. iPad. Every object considered. Every material chosen with intent. The white earbuds. The aluminum unibody. The glass slab. This period is real and it is genuinely great. Credit where it's due. Jobs and Ive in the same room is a singular thing in design history.

2011

Steve Jobs dies. Ive is named head of all design — hardware and software. The mind is gone. The hands are now in charge. Watch what happens next.

2013

The trash can Mac Pro. A beautiful black cylinder. Thermally constrained from day one — the shape couldn't accommodate proper cooling for the GPUs pro users needed. Could not be upgraded. Could not be repaired. Thermal throttled. Apple had to publicly apologize to professional users and spend years building a replacement. A trash can that was, functionally, trash.

2015

The butterfly keyboard. The thinnest keyboard mechanism ever shipped. Also the most failure-prone keyboard in Apple history. Keys stopped working if dust entered the mechanism. Apple extended warranties. Paid class action settlements. Spent four years iterating on a broken design before reverting to the old mechanism. He optimized for 0.8mm of thinness and broke typing.

2016

The dongle era. Removed MagSafe. Removed USB-A. Removed the headphone jack from iPhone 7 (one year after putting it on the MacBook). Required dongles for everything. A professional needed 3–4 adapters to do what one port used to do. Filed as a design decision. Minimalism that punishes the user is not design. It is aesthetic tyranny.

2019

The cheese grater Mac Pro. The tower returns — professionals rejoice. The design: a cheese grater pattern machined into aluminum. Beautiful. $5,999 base. The Pro Display XDR stand: $999 sold separately. The stand. Not in the box. $999. For a stand. Filed permanently.

2019

Jony leaves Apple. Announces LoveFrom — his own design studio. Says he wants to pursue "other creative projects." The design world waits. Still waiting.

2019–2024

Five years of LoveFrom. Output: some work for Airbnb. A few undisclosed projects. No product. No object. No artifact. The most famous industrial designer alive has produced nothing visible in five years of running his own studio. The hands without the commission.

2024

Partners with Sam Altman. OpenAI funding. Building an "AI device" — described as a screen-free, context-aware AI companion that listens and assists throughout your day. The man who spent 20 years designing objects that felt private, considered, and human is now designing a device that listens to everything you say, all day, in your home. The aesthetic has been sold to the surveillance economy. Filed.

THE ROAST

Jony Ive did not design Apple. Jony Ive was the hands of a design partnership where Steve Jobs held the vision, the taste, the obsessive standard, and the authority to kill anything that didn't earn its existence. Ive had the craft. Jobs had the why. The why is the whole thing.

When Jobs died, the constraint died with him. What followed: a trash can that overheated, a keyboard that broke when dust landed on it, a port philosophy that punished professionals, and a $999 stand. These are not unlucky products. They are what happens when the aesthetic is in charge of itself — when there is nobody in the room who will say "this is wrong, start over."

The keyboard is the primary interface between a human and a computer. It must work. It must work every time. The butterfly mechanism failed under normal use — dust, crumbs, a single particle in the wrong place. Apple paid settlements. Extended warranties globally. Nobody at the highest level of design stopped this from shipping. Because the form looked correct. And the form was the whole thing now.

Then he left. Took the title, the legacy, the reputation — and opened LoveFrom. The design world exhaled. Waited for the object. Five years. Nothing. A few Airbnb brand exercises. Some undisclosed consulting. The most famous designer in the world ran his own studio for five years and produced nothing you can hold.

And then: Sam Altman. The AI device. The object that listens to you all day. Jony Ive — who made privacy feel designed, who made objects feel like they respected your attention — is now designing the most ambient surveillance product ever proposed for the home market.
