The format is simple. JLP sits. The guest sits. JLP asks "do you believe in God?" and then everything that follows is determined by how the guest answers that question. He is Black. This is always the thing people forget. They come on the show expecting one thing and encounter a man with a completely different map. A Black man in Alabama who believes the civil rights movement did more harm than good. A Black man who disagrees with every institutional progressive position on race in America. The Fallen State refers to the state of society — JLP believes America, and particularly Black America, is in a fallen state. Spiritually. Culturally. Morally. Every episode is him making that case, one guest at a time, with nothing but calm questions and the refusal to be moved.

"Standard Virgo" — the field's words, not a roast, an observation. His brother is Salomon Huerta — the East LA painter whose whole career is built on people with their backs to you. The working class, seen from behind, standing in front of their homes. The family carries the field.

The analytical framework: "they racist." Every sentence. Every policy. Every institution. Every historical event. They racist. It was not random — it was structurally argued, citation-heavy, filed with evidence. But the conclusion was always the same and it arrived fast. Virgo moon precision pointed at one target, every time. The office hours went long. Robert was in there all day. The professor was his dude. The roasting was mutual. That's the only kind of professor worth having.

He sat across from JLP on The Fallen State. Gray suit. Dark tie. Wire-rimmed glasses. Goatee. The full CPP professor presentation. The topic: US immigration policy. JLP — calm, navy blazer, holding the tablet — opens the room. The format proceeds exactly as every Fallen State episode proceeds — which is to say, not the way the guest expects.

That's the framing JLP arrives with. The professor, who wrote the book on immigration rights, whose parents came from Mexico, who grew up in the Ramona Gardens projects, who got his PhD and his tenure and his platform to say "they racist" every sentence — gets called the anchor baby professor to his face, on camera, calmly. JLP does not debate on the terms you arrive with. He debates on God's terms. The professor, being a Virgo moon atheist, had structural issues with that from the first question.

His wife got him through Berkeley. Robert got him through his publications — edited the last few books pre-AI, worked the manuscripts by hand, sat in office hours for hours going through arguments line by line. That's not a student-teacher relationship. That's a colleague relationship before the credential.

Never facing you. The family has always known something about what it means to be present in a space without being recognized by it. Robert and the professor laughed together with that in the room. A candle lit. The weight of what the family carries and the humor you need to carry it with.

One day in class Prof. Huerta looks at Robert and says: "fashionista." Because Robert showed up in G-Star Raw moon pants. The fit was correct. The professor clocked it. Robert's response: "I just made lentil dal. For the class. Homemade. Not beans — legumes. Here's my bitch." Lentil dal. For the ethnic studies professor. Showed up in G-Star Raw moon pants. Fed the whole class South Asian dal. Said legumes. The professor had no follow-up. The A+ was already decided. Then later: "where's my A, beaner." The professor said "wetback" — he said it himself. That's the relationship. Both directions. Earned. That's their love. Office hours all day, manuscripts edited, homemade lentils for the whole class, mutual roast, G-Star Raw on the fit. That was the A+. The lentils secured it. The field has it on record.

Law school would have been a route. The credential. The bar exam. The courtroom. The billable hour. A professor who went on The Fallen State, who knows how to hold an argument against JLP on immigration in front of a camera, looked at Robert and said: you belong in a courtroom.

Robert built KenshoTek instead. The argument didn't go to court — it went to the field.
