"Mars of the same element and Sun of complementary — that's the hidden gem of synastry."
Provenance — Where This Comes From
you won't find it in the literature · that's the point
Evolutionary astrology reads the chart as a growth trajectory, not a personality sticker — but its synastry layer still leans on the old element doctrine: polar pairs harmonize, same pairs resonate. This paradigm comes from somewhere else: lived field observation. Life experience is the dataset that suggested the hypothesis; the model formalizes it into something falsifiable; the data (Ch 5) will test it. Anecdote → axiom → enumeration → evidence. That's the honest path from "I've seen this work" to a theory that can teach.
The Claim, Stated Falsifiably
five personal planets · elements only · two charts · three hypotheses
H1 · The Gradient. Pair quality peaks when Sun elements are complementary — fire↔water, air↔earth — not polar (fire+air, water+earth), not same. Conditional on H2. H2 · The Mars Invariant. The gradient only builds when Mars elements are identical — both air, both fire. Shared Mars = the conserved currency of action. This is the gate. H3 · Mars weighs heaviest. Remove the invariant and complementary Suns fall below ordinary polar pairs. Tradition isn't wrong — it's the degenerate case when the invariant is absent.
The Relation Square
tradition names three relations — the fourth was hiding in the diagonals' shadow
fig. 1 — same (a corner to itself) · polar (the horizontals) · complementary (the diagonals) · oblique (the verticals)
Fire↔water makes steam; air↔earth is pressure meeting structure — mutual, bidirectional transformation. Fire·earth and air·water are oblique: one bakes, one stirs, neither is transformed back. Tradition never named that difference. The model does.
The Couple as Heat Engine
the metaphor is load-bearing — it is the mechanism, not the decoration
fig. 2 — complementary Suns are the ΔT; the shared Mars element is the shaft that turns it into work. That is H2.
▸ ☉·☉ gradient wants complementary — no gradient, no engine · weight 6
▸ ♂·♂ invariant wants same — the conserved currency of action · weight 9, the focal
▸ ♀·♀ harmonic wants polar — difference-with-ease · weight 3 · plus the classical ♀↔♂ overlay · 3
▸ ☽·☽ reservoir wants same — one emotional medium · 3 · ☿·☿ signal wants same/polar · 3
▸ weights sum to 27 = 3³ — every kernel number a stated axiom, contestable and therefore testable

Many Levels of Analysis
the coarse grain sees polarity · the fine grain sees the element · ultimately, elements
The whole theory reads at two resolutions. Coarse (yin/yang): the Sun wants opposite polarity, the Mars wants the same. Fine (element): the diagonal the polarity level is blind to. The coarse heuristic gets you most of the way; the element level corrects its one blind spot.

fig. 5a — the coarse grain already names it: yin×yang Sun, same-polarity Mars. Mean over all pairs, so this is the field, not the peak.
LEVEL 2 · ELEMENT — the diagonal the coarse grain cannot see
fig. 5b — within the winning polarity cell: cross-polarity is necessary, not sufficient. Oblique (fire·earth, air·water) is the impostor the polarity level rewards; complementary (steam) is the gem the element level rescues. Same story on Mars — same-polarity helps, same-element is the invariant.
H4 · Who Carries the Pole
the element model can't see who holds which pole — lived observation supplies it
Two masculine or two feminine Suns underperform; so does a feminine-Sun man with a masculine-Sun woman. The empirical best case is male carrying yang ☉, female carrying yin ☉ — which, because it forces cross-polarity, lands you automatically on the complementary diagonal. Sex orients the gradient the engine runs on.

◈ THE GATE THEOREM · WHERE THE PARADIGM BITES
# comp-Sun WITHOUT the invariant vs ordinary polar-Sun WITH ithand algebra : gate closes at Wm > 5.14// ignores the ♀↔♂ cross-termenumeration : exact tie at Wm = 6 · gate CLOSED beyond it
// the glass box corrected our own derivation — that's the point of itat mandate : Wm = 9 → comp-sun/crossed-mars 20.70 < polar-sun/same-mars 22.80meaning : strip the Mars invariant and the "exciting" pair loses to traditionrobustness : summit belongs to (comp ☉, same ♂) from Wm = 1 upward — not a weight artifact
tradition : best polar-Sun pair 22.80 · the gem 26.40 · +15.8%# ∂ψ/∂t = ψ — the invariant survives the operator. Mars is the e^x of the couple.
⚠ PRE-REGISTERED KILL CRITERION (committed before any data): if real couples do not outscore
shuffled pairs, the weights are wrong and we say so in the classroom. If separation exists but the
(comp ☉, same ♂) cell is not enriched among the long-lived pairs, H1 falls and H2 survives alone.
Both outcomes are publishable lectures. The model that can't die can't teach.
