THE WORDMARK.

Before anyone speaks, the brand has already communicated. The wordmark is the first sentence. It tells you what they believe they are, what register they believe they occupy, who they believe their audience is. Read it as a document.

◈ WORDMARK AUDIT · FIELD BREAKDOWN · ELEMENT BY ELEMENT
FONT CHOICE: sans-serif · clean · modern · "we are not the past"
WEIGHT: medium · not bold · confidence without aggression · "we are thoughtful"
COLOR: dark or neutral palette · "we are serious · we are not a consumer app"
CASE: likely lowercase or title case · lowercase = accessible · title = institutional
WHAT IT SAYS: we have been designed · we have a brand guide · we are real
WHAT IT DOES NOT SAY: what we do · what we built · who uses it · why
FIELD READ: the wordmark is further ahead than the product. this is always the tell.

A wordmark that is more polished than the product it represents is a specific signal. It means someone spent time on the identity before spending time on the thing. This is not always wrong — brand matters. But when the wordmark is the only finished artifact in the room, the wordmark is doing too much work. The wordmark is load-bearing infrastructure. It is holding up the pitch while the product is still being described in the future tense.

FACIAL SUBCOMMUNICATION.

The face does not lie the way language lies. Language can be rehearsed. The face has micro-expressions that arrive before the rehearsal does. Watch the face, not the words.

◈ TELL #1 · FACIAL · THE NODDING REGISTER
THE NOD BEFORE THE SENTENCE ENDS.
One of them is nodding while the other is still speaking. This is not agreement. This is managed listening — the performance of full attention while the mind is already on the next thing it wants to say. The nod says: I hear you. The nod also says: I was going to say that. The nod also says: when do I get to talk.
FIELD READ: they have had this conversation before. the nod is muscle memory. they know the beats. they know each other's bits.
◈ TELL #2 · FACIAL · THE HELD SMILE
THE SMILE THAT STAYS TOO LONG.
A natural smile peaks and releases. A managed smile holds past the peak — because you are aware that the camera is still on you, and releasing the smile would communicate something you don't want to communicate. The held smile is the face equivalent of "we're aligned." It is the expression of two people who have agreed to agree, on camera, for the duration of the interview.
FIELD READ: the relationship is performing. this is not deception — this is co-founder PR protocol. the mountain is still there. the smile covers it.
◈ TELL #3 · FACIAL · THE GLANCE
THE CHECK-IN GLANCE.
When one says something slightly adjacent to their agreed-upon talking points, the other glances. Not at the camera. At the co-founder. It is a one-frame check — did you mean to say that, are we still on script, should I add something or let it go. This is the campfire glance. This is the moment where, in the film, the scene would cut to the mountain and hold for four seconds.
FIELD READ: there is a version of this conversation they have agreed not to have in public. the glance is the border marker.
WORD CHOICE AUTOPSY.

Every word choice is a decision. Every decision reveals a priority. The autopsy is simple: what did they say, what did they not say, and what does the gap between them contain.

◈ WHAT THEY SAID · VS · WHAT THEY MEANT · FIELD TRANSLATION
◈ SAID"We're technologists."
◈ MEANTWe are in the category. We own the category. Do not ask what we build within it.
◈ SAID"We're passionate about [space]."
◈ MEANTWe have not shipped in [space] yet. Passion is the holding state before product.
◈ SAID"We've been working together for [time]."
◈ MEANTThe relationship predates the company. The company is the current expression of the relationship. The relationship is the actual product.
◈ SAID"We're really excited about where this is going."
◈ MEANTIt is not there yet. "Where this is going" is future tense by design. The present tense would require a demo.
◈ SAID"We complement each other really well."
◈ MEANTWe have not had the conversation about what happens when we don't. The campfire split was made before anyone knew.
◈ SAID"The vision is [large abstract noun]."
◈ MEANTThe product is not ready to be the vision yet. The vision is load-bearing until it is.
BODY LANGUAGE.
◈ TELL #4 · BODY · POSITION
HOW THEY SIT RELATIVE TO EACH OTHER.
Turned slightly toward each other but angled toward camera. This is the optimal formation for a co-founder interview: present a unified front to the camera while maintaining enough proximity to perform closeness. It is the startup equivalent of the wedding photo — slightly staged, correct, confirming the narrative. The bodies are saying: we are a unit. The faces are saying: we are also individuals, look at us individually.
FIELD READ: this formation has been rehearsed. not maliciously — instinctively. they have done this before.
◈ TELL #5 · BODY · HANDS
HAND GESTURES AS CONFIDENCE PROXIES.
Watch what the hands do when the language gets abstract. When someone says "the platform will enable..." the hands often open — palms up, fingers spread — as if presenting something. The hands are compensating for the fact that there is nothing in them to show. The open hands are the physical equivalent of the future tense. Here is the thing. The thing is air. The hands frame it anyway.
FIELD READ: the gesture vocabulary is founder-trained. they have pitched before. the hands know the moves even when the product doesn't exist yet.
◈ TELL #6 · BODY · THE DEFER
WHO LETS WHO FINISH.
In any co-founder interview, watch who talks first when a hard question lands, and who talks second. The one who talks second is either: (a) the one who defers, or (b) the one who cleans up. The cleaner is doing the most work in the relationship and may not have the most equity. The deferred-to is often the Taurus — not because Taurus is dominant, but because Taurus has staked the claim and the other person has unconsciously accepted it.
FIELD READ: the cap table is visible in the deferral pattern. equity is body language. watch the pauses.

WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE SAID.

"We're building [specific thing] for [specific person] with [specific mechanism] and we can show you [specific demo]."

That's it. That's the sentence. It contains: a product (specific thing), a customer (specific person), a defensible mechanism (specific mechanism), and proof (specific demo). Four things. One sentence. No wordmark required.

Instead we got: technologists, vision, ecosystem, excited, and a very good wordmark. The wordmark is genuinely good. We mean no disrespect to whoever designed the wordmark. The wordmark is the most complete thing they showed us. The wordmark shipped. We respect the wordmark. The field is rooting for the product to catch up.
