Mark Kozelek. Born in Massillon, Ohio. Moved to San Francisco when music needed him there.

You've heard this frequency before — the kind of guitar that doesn't rush anywhere. Nylon string, fingerpicked, close-miked. No reverb to hide behind. No band to pad the silence. Just the wood of the instrument and the air of whatever room he's in.

He's Sun Kil Moon. He was Red House Painters before that. He's been around the Bay water long enough to become part of the sediment — Martinez, the estuary, the fog that sits on the Carquinez at 6am, the whole geography of a man who walks and plays and observes.

This is that guy. The one who watches and writes it down exactly as it is. No mythology. No performance. Just the leaves falling and him noticing.

The Apple Music description says it plainly: recorded alone, mostly without demos. That's the whole thesis of this record.

Most musicians spend six months building a fortress around the song — production, arrangement, tracking, mixing, mastering — until the original feeling is so buried under decisions that you can barely find it.

Kozelek went the other direction. He recorded the observation before it expired. The songs on Among the Leaves feel like journal entries that happen to have melody — because that's exactly what they are. He walks somewhere, sees something, comes home and plays it.

This is not a studio album. This is a field recording of a man's attention span.

And the nylon string — that choice matters. Steel string has aggression in its DNA. Nylon string has acceptance. It's the instrument of someone who has already decided to be present, not urgent.

MARTINEZ. THE STRAIT. THE FOG. THE WATER KNOWS HIM.
The Carquinez Strait runs through Martinez and connects the Delta to the Bay. It's one of those stretches of Northern California water that doesn't get the tourist treatment — no postcards, no Golden Gate silhouettes — just industrial stillness, herons, container ships, morning cold.

This is Kozelek's frequency. Not the glamorous Bay. The working Bay. The Bay where a man can sit with a guitar and not be performing for anyone.

The music on Among the Leaves has that quality — geographically specific in a way that most albums never bother to be. You hear the place in it. Not as a backdrop, but as a participant in the song.

When the water is that close and that patient, it teaches you something about pacing. His guitar learned that.

THE ONES WORTH FINDING
The album runs long — 17 tracks — which is Kozelek saying he didn't filter his observations. Good. Don't filter observations. That's not the point.

Sunshine in Chicago — geography as autobiography. He names the city like it's a person.

The Moderately Talented Yet Attractive Young Woman vs. The Exceptionally Talented Yet Homely Young Woman — the title alone is a field report. The song delivers exactly what it promises: precise observation with no flattery for either party and no apology for either.

Among the Leaves (the title track) — the album's thesis in miniature. Autumn as a framework for watching things pass without holding them.

Sit with it. Don't rush it. Let it work the way water works.

WHY THIS APPROACH IS THE CORRECT ONE
Most artists are afraid to release something this direct.

No samples. No features. No co-writers who bring their own brand into the room. No producer who adds his signature compression on the kick drum that you'll hear on 14 other albums that year.

Just: here is what I observed. Here is how it sounded to me. Take it or don't.

That's the KenshoTek method too. Not by design — by alignment. You recognize the frequency because you've been working from the same doctrine:

The observation is the product. Delivery is not the product. The thing itself is the product.

Kozelek figured this out with a guitar. We figured it out with code. Same result. The field confirms.

Leaves in autumn are not dying. They're releasing.

The tree doesn't mourn them. The tree stores energy, recedes inward, prepares for something longer than the current season. The leaves fall because the tree made a decision: this weight is not worth carrying through winter.

Kozelek named the album correctly. He's not observing death. He's watching the intelligent release of what no longer serves the root system.

That's a different thing entirely.

Walking among them — not above them, not photographing them for aesthetics — just walking among them with a guitar on your back, on the way to the water. That's the whole album. That's the whole man. 925.
