Huck Finn has written a letter.

Huck has been taught that helping Jim
is a sin against God and society.

he tears the letter up.

"All right, then, I'll go to hell."

this is the sentence.
one sentence in an 1884 novel
that contains the entire American argument.
Huck chooses his conscience over his conditioning.

America has been deciding whether to do the same thing
for 142 years.
still deciding.

the book is banned in schools.
for the wrong reasons AND the right ones.
but every time it is banned,
the ban is the proof that Clemens was right
to write it.

Born November 30, Florida, Missouri. Halley's Comet is visible. Population of hometown: 100. His father is a struggling lawyer. The family is not comfortable.

1847

His father dies. He is eleven. He leaves school and goes to work as a printer's apprentice. The education he gets in print shops is the real education.

1857

Becomes a licensed river pilot on the Mississippi. The river teaches him everything: how to read a surface for what's underneath. The novelist's primary skill. The river gave it to him.

1858

His brother Henry is killed in a riverboat explosion. Sam got him the job. He carried the guilt the rest of his life. The wound that never closed.

1861

The Civil War closes the Mississippi. His pilot career ends. He goes west — Nevada, California. Tries silver mining. Fails. Starts writing instead. The plan fails. The real plan begins.

1863

First uses the pen name Mark Twain. The river goes with him. Two fathoms deep. Safe water. He will use this name for the rest of his life.

1865

"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." The voice arrives fully formed. He is 29. The country stops and listens. It has not stopped since.

1870

Marries Olivia Langdon — Livy. She is the editor of everything. He reads her every draft. She marks what is too much. He argues. She is usually right. The partnership is the work.

1876

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Hannibal on the page. The river. The summer. The boy who wanted adventure. The prelude to the real book.

1884

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The question America has never answered. Jim. The raft. The river. "All right, then, I'll go to hell." The moral center of American literature. Written. Filed. Still running.

1894

Bankruptcy. The Paige typesetter machine — he invested everything in it. The machine was a masterpiece that didn't work. He lost it all. Debts: ~$100,000. The equivalent of several million today.

1895

He is 59 years old. He goes on a worldwide lecture tour — Australia, India, South Africa, England. He pays off every debt in full. Saturn collecting. Saturn released.

1896

Susy Clemens dies of meningitis. She is 24. He is in England. He cannot get home in time. He never fully recovers. He calls it the turning of the tide.

1904

Olivia — Livy — dies. She has been ill for years. He reads to her every day until she cannot hear him anymore. The editor is gone. The partnership ends.

1909

"I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it." He says it. He means it. December 24 — his daughter Jean dies in her bathtub. Epilepsy. Christmas Eve. The last blow.

1910

Halley's Comet reaches perihelion April 20. Samuel Langhorne Clemens dies April 21, 1910. Redding, Connecticut. He was 74. He was right. The field notes this. The comet confirms the man.
