Richard Pryor was not a comedian.

A man who took everything that happened to him — and everything is a lot when you grow up in Peoria, Illinois, in a brothel run by your grandmother, with a father who was a hustler and a boxer and an absent mother and a childhood that had no business producing a genius —

and he took all of it, stood in front of strangers, and told the truth without a net.

That is a disposition toward honesty so complete that it turned pain into performance and performance into something closer to religion.

Richard Pryor was freebasing cocaine.
There was an accident.
He was set on fire.
He ran down Parthenia Street engulfed in flames.

Third-degree burns over 50% of his body.
Six weeks in the burn unit at Sherman Oaks Hospital.
Surgeons said he might not make it.

He made it.

And then — he turned it into a bit.

1986 Multiple sclerosis diagnosis. The body begins to give way. He keeps working. The field notes this as field conduct.
1998 Kennedy Center Honor. The institution finally caught up to what the field already knew.
