The Cornell Legacy Project interviewed 1,500+ people aged 70 to 100. The question was simple: what do you wish you had known earlier? The answers converged on love, time, creative expression, and less worry. The answers did not converge on EBITDA, Series B terms, or quarterly growth metrics. The data is clean. The conclusion is not controversial. It is only controversial to people who have built their identity around the column.

The Harvard Grant Study followed 268 men over 75 years — the longest longitudinal study of human adult development in history. The conclusion, in the words of principal investigator George Vaillant: "Happiness is love. Full stop." He spent thirty-five years on the study. That was his sentence. The market did not appear in the sentence. The multiple did not appear in the sentence.

LET ME GUESS: NEXT QUARTER MATTERS ON THE DEATHBED.

Here is the world that chose the other thing. The portfolio. The EVAL. The deck. The multiple. Here is what that world looks like, documented.

The portfolio: one hundred slides. Waterfall charts. TAM, SAM, SOM. The hockey stick. The "conservative case" that is somehow still a hockey stick. The logo wall of investors who believe in the mission. The mission, which is to maximize shareholder value in a manner consistent with sustainable long-term growth. That sentence. That sentence is in there. Somebody put it in there and nobody questioned it because it sounds like something a sentence is supposed to sound like.

The EVAL: a number arrived at by a spreadsheet referencing other spreadsheets referencing assumptions referencing a comps analysis that was last updated when the sector was different. The number has four significant figures after the decimal point, which is how you know it was made by a computer and not by a human who has ever been in a room with the product.

The investor pitch: thirty minutes in a glass building. Fourteen slides. The founder is nervous. The investor is checking their phone under the table because they have another meeting in forty minutes with a different founder who is also nervous. The chemistry in the room will later be described, on both sides, as "not quite right." Nobody will say what the chemistry was. They will send a polite email.

Now: the deathbed. The glass building is gone. The slides are on a server that was decommissioned two years after the company was acquired. The EVAL is a number in a document that nobody is reading. The multiple: irrelevant to the duration of a life. Let me guess. The next quarterly report matters. At the end. On the deathbed. I'm sure that's the one.
