◈ I · THE FIELD POSITION · WHAT PRINCE WAS
HE WALKED INTO A STUDIO AT 19 AND NEGOTIATED FULL CREATIVE CONTROL BEFORE SIGNING ANYTHING. IN 1978.
Prince Rogers Nelson did not become the greatest musician who ever lived.
He arrived that way and spent forty years making everyone else admit it.
At 19, he played all 27 instruments on his debut album.
He produced it himself. He wrote every song.
He negotiated full creative control before the ink was dry.
The label thought they were signing an artist. They signed a position.
♊ Gemini sun. Mutable air. The sign of duality — but Prince did not contain multitudes.
He was all of them simultaneously, at full volume, with no apology.
Funk and rock and soul and gospel and jazz and R&B and new wave and classical and Minneapolis Sound —
not as genre-hopping but as one coherent musical intelligence
operating at a frequency most musicians never reach in a single genre.
"If you don't own your masters, your master owns you."
— Prince Rogers Nelson · said it · meant it · proved it · every single time
◈ II · THE INSTRUMENTS · ALL OF THEM · ONE PERSON
27 INSTRUMENTS. DEBUT ALBUM. 1978. AGE 20.
The standard story is that Prince was a great guitarist.
The actual story is that Prince was a complete musician who happened to also be one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived.
Guitar. Bass. Keyboards. Synthesizer. Drums. Percussion.
Piano. Organ. Harmonica. Horn arrangements. String arrangements.
He did not hire other musicians because he heard exactly what he wanted and he was the only person who could play it.

The Purple Rain guitar solo on the title track is 3 minutes and 32 seconds.
He played it once. He played it at a live show. The album version is the live take.
He walked out on stage in front of thousands of people
and played something that had never existed before
and it was so complete they used it as the studio recording.
◈ III · THE CATALOG · ESSENTIAL FIELD RECORDINGS
39 STUDIO ALBUMS. PLUS THE VAULT.
◈ 1978
FOR YOU
The debut. Age 20. 27 instruments. All of them. The opening statement of intent.
◈ 1980
DIRTY MIND
The record that proved he would never do what the label wanted. Raw. Funky. The moment Prince announced what he actually was.
◈ 1982
1999
The synthesizers alone changed popular music. The Minneapolis Sound was him. Written entirely by one person.
◈ 1984
PURPLE RAIN
The film. The album. The guitar solo. The most complete artistic statement of the 1980s. The rain never stops.
◈ 1985
AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY
Released at the peak of Purple Rain's commercial run. Deliberately. Gemini does not stay where you expect it.
◈ 1987
SIGN "O" THE TIMES
The greatest double album ever made. Gang wars, AIDS, a tornado, a baby with no father — and a synth line that makes all of it bearable.
◈ 1988
LOVESEXY
One continuous track on CD. Prince refused to let you skip. The whole thing or none of it. The field notes this as a philosophical position.
◈ THE VAULT
ESTIMATED 2,000+
Unreleased recordings at Paisley Park. He was always recording. The field suspects the vault is greater than the catalog.
◈ IV · THE MASTERS · THE BATTLE · THE SYMBOL · THE WIN
HE WROTE "SLAVE" ON HIS FACE AND WENT TO THE GRAMMYS.
In 1993, Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol —
♀ merged with ♂ merged with something that had no name in any language —
because Warner Bros owned the trademark on "Prince."
He refused to record under a name someone else held the deed to.
The press called him "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince."
He called it the only move available.
He mailed floppy disks to journalists with new music.
He wrote "SLAVE" on his cheek in eyeliner at awards ceremonies.
He released music on the internet in 1997 when the internet was dial-up.
He gave away albums with concert tickets.
He pulled his entire catalog from streaming services when they wouldn't pay him correctly.
Every single decision was about ownership. Every single one.
"Warner Bros. got some of my music. They didn't get me."
— Prince Rogers Nelson · filed · confirmed · permanent record
He got his masters back in 1999 when his contract expired.
He never stopped fighting for them.
He spent the rest of his life making sure every artist who came after him knew what was at stake.
The Taylor Swift masters dispute of 2019 — every article cited Prince.
The field does not forget who set the precedent.

◈ V · ♊ GEMINI · THE ASTROLOGICAL FIELD READ
MUTABLE AIR. THE SIGN THAT CONTAINS EVERY FREQUENCY AT ONCE.
Gemini is the sign of duality — the twins, the two faces, the mind that holds opposites simultaneously.
Most Gemini charts express this as versatility. Prince expressed it as total mastery of every musical dimension at the same time.
Sacred and profane. Gospel and explicit. Acoustic and electronic. Vulnerable and untouchable.
The same album could contain a prayer and a riff that would make a preacher leave the room.
Gemini does not choose between its natures. It is all of them, always, at full strength.
The Mercury rulership is visible everywhere:
the wit, the speed, the ability to shift registers mid-sentence, mid-bar, mid-note.
His interviews were famously evasive — not because he had nothing to say
but because he understood that the music said it better than words could.
Mercury-ruled intelligence: information travels at the speed that serves the message, not the interviewer.
