11 wild turkeys. One 5K loop. Pinole hills. Sumatra dark roast in hand, still hot, Indonesian volcanic soil in the cup. The turkeys did not look up. Not once. Not once in 11 sightings across a 5-kilometer circuit did a single bird register me as relevant. That is not coincidence. That is territory.
The Sumatra was correct. The walk was correct. The turkeys were already there before the walk, will be there after the walk, will be there long after whoever parked that blue MINI Cooper in that lot has moved on to other lots in other cities. One walk. One coffee. 11 of them. Filed.
◈ THE SUMATRA · FIELD FUEL · VOLCANIC ORIGIN STORY
SUMATRA MANDHELING / BLUE BATAK
TOBA VOLCANIC ZONE · NORTH SUMATRA · INDONESIA · ~1,500M ELEVATION · WET-HULLED PROCESS
This is not a breakfast blend.

Sumatra Mandheling — or its northern neighbor Sumatra Blue Batak — grows on the volcanic slopes surrounding Lake Toba in North Sumatra. The soil is volcanic: high mineral content, low acidity, exceptional drainage. The kind of soil that produces a coffee that doesn't apologize for being heavy.

The cup profile: full body, almost syrupy. Earthy — dark chocolate, cedar, tobacco, stone fruit underneath. Low acidity. This is the correct walk coffee because it does not require anything from you. It doesn't need you to meet it halfway with sweetness or dilution. It just arrives. It fills. You keep walking.

Processed wet-hulled (Giling Basah) — the Sumatran method. Coffee is hulled before it's fully dry, which produces that characteristic low-acid, almost funky earthiness. Other origins dry the bean completely before hulling. Sumatra doesn't. The humidity of the process enters the bean. The land enters the cup.

Now here is the part that matters. Lake Toba is not just a lake. It is a supervolcanic caldera — the remnant of the largest volcanic eruption in the last 2 million years. ~74,000 years ago, the Toba supervolcano erupted with a force 10,000 times greater than Mount St. Helens. Estimated 2,800 cubic kilometers of material ejected. Global volcanic winter. Average temperatures dropped 3–5°C for years. Crops failed before crops existed.

The genetic bottleneck theory: Homo sapiens nearly ended. Population estimates suggest the global human population collapsed to somewhere between 3,000 and 10,000 individuals. Everyone alive on Earth today is descended from the survivors of that event — a group that could fit in a small concert venue.

The coffee grows in the volcanic soil of the near-extinction event. Every bag of Sumatra Mandheling is grown in the caldera of the thing that almost ended us. Full body. Earthy. Low acidity. Consumed on a 5K field walk while 11 turkeys patrolled their territory and did not look up.
◈ VERDICT: CORRECT WALK COFFEE · NO ARGUMENT ENTERTAINED · FULL BODY · VOLCANIC SOIL · NEAR-EXTINCTION ORIGIN · EARTHY · LOAD-BEARING
◈ TOBA SUPERVOLCANO · FIELD NUMBERS
Eruption: ~74,000 years BP · ~2,800 km³ ejected
VEI 8 · LARGEST QUATERNARY ERUPTION CONFIRMED · CALDERA: 100KM × 30KM
Human bottleneck: ~3,000–10,000 individuals surviving
MITOCHONDRIAL DNA EVIDENCE · ALL 8 BILLION LIVING HUMANS DESCEND FROM THIS GROUP
Distance: roasted cup of Sumatra → your hand → 5K walk in Pinole
The distance between the event that nearly ended the species and a cup of coffee in a California park is: a bag of Sumatra Mandheling. That's it. The cup is the caldera. Filed.
◈ THE SIGHTINGS · LOG · ELEVEN TOTAL
Not a group of 11. That would be simpler. Easier to dismiss — a rafter moved through, I saw them, done. No. These were distributed across the entire 5K circuit. Separate encounters. Separate terrain. Separate decisions, by separate birds, to be exactly where they were, exactly when the walk passed through. The walk didn't find 11 turkeys. The walk passed through a territory that 11 turkeys already owned.
◈ SIGHTING LOG · 5K PINOLE LOOP · MAY 2026 · SUMATRA: HOT
01–04
RAFTER OF 4 — upper hillside oak section, early loop. Moving parallel to the trail on a course they had clearly mapped before I was born. No acknowledgment of my presence. Standard operating procedure.
05
LONE TOM — roadside near a chain-link fence. Alone, deliberate. Standing in the open. Not lost, not confused, not separated from a group. Alone by choice. The tom thing. He didn't move for me. I moved around him.
06–07
TWO HENS — threading through an oak grove on the lower slope. Moving efficiently. The oak grove was theirs. I was a visitor who happened to have a trail permit the turkeys didn't recognize as relevant to their operations.
08–12
RAFTER OF 5 — parking lot. Business district edge. They cut across the asphalt at an angle suggesting they had a meeting to get to. Purposeful gait. Zero hesitation. The parking lot is their shortcut between habitat zones. Has been since before the parking lot was paved.
TOTAL SIGHTINGS · ONE 5K LOOP 11
◈ FIELD NOTE · ON THE PARKING LOT RAFTER
Five wild turkeys crossing a parking lot in Contra Costa County with the bearing of people who have already missed one meeting and are trying not to miss the next one is either the most specific image of the year or the most universal. The turkeys do not perceive the parking lot as a parking lot. They perceive it as a gap in the vegetation they have always used to move between the oak grove and the hillside. The parking lot is a temporary interruption to their route. The paving crew did not consult them. They adapted. The route remains.
◈ THE CONSERVATION BACKSTORY · WHY 11 ON ONE WALK IS THE CORRECT NUMBER
Wild turkeys were not always common in the Bay Area hills. They are a successful restoration story dressed up as a normal Tuesday. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) began releasing Rio Grande subspecies wild turkeys into the Coast Ranges starting in the 1960s. The releases were strategic — birds introduced to suitable habitat in Contra Costa, Alameda, Marin, and other Bay Area counties.
Rio Grande turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia) — native to the Great Plains, well-suited to the California oak woodland and chaparral ecosystem. They found the terrain compatible. They reproduced. Their offspring reproduced. Population compounded across decades, uninterrupted, until today when a person walking 5K in Pinole encounters 11 of them without trying.
The math is: 60 years of successful reproduction from strategic stocking = 11 birds on your Tuesday morning walk, none of whom acknowledge you as significant. The land is alive under the pavement. You can see it if you walk early enough. The turkeys are the proof. They are the land's report card, delivered live, every morning, to anyone willing to be present.
◈ TURKEY TERRITORY MATH · PINOLE HILLS
Home range (wild turkey, California): 370–1,200 acres
SEASONAL VARIATION · MALES LARGER RANGE · HENS TIGHTER DURING NESTING
5K loop coverage: ~5 km linear distance through ~2 habitat zones
OAK WOODLAND → CHAPARRAL EDGE → SUBURBAN-ADJACENT → BACK TO OAK
11 birds / 5K = 2.2 turkeys per kilometer · sustained sighting rate
This is not a fluke density. This is established territory. The birds are not passing through. The birds are home. You are the one passing through. The math confirms it. The birds' behavior confirms it. The Sumatra is incidental to this calculation but load-bearing to the experience of walking through it.
◈ THE MINI COOPER · PARKED · UNBOTHERED
A blue MINI Cooper Clubman. Parked in a lot adjacent to the walk route. Unbothered by the turkeys crossing its perimeter. Unbothered by the walker with a Sumatra. Parked the way parked cars park: completely without opinion.
The MINI Cooper is the right car for the wrong reasons and the wrong car for the right reasons simultaneously. It is a lesson in what happens when you correctly identify a problem — the car is too big, the car has always been too big, the car does not need to be this big — and then build the solution so well that the market eventually makes it bigger again in response to consumer demand. The Issigonis paradox.

Issigonis designed the original Mini in response to the 1956 Suez Crisis — British gas rationing forced a small-car mandate. He had ten months. He produced a car that fit four adults and their luggage in a footprint smaller than a current compact SUV, using a transverse engine layout and front-wheel drive that the entire automotive industry eventually adopted. The solution was so correct that it became the default.
The blue MINI Clubman in the Pinole parking lot is the 2020s interpretation: 15 centimeters longer than the original, 400 kilograms heavier, turbocharged, digitally instrumented, parked between a Ford F-150 and a Kia Telluride. Still the smallest thing in the lot. Still the most interesting object in the lot. A MINI in a California parking lot with turkeys crossing nearby is either the most ordinary scene of the year or the most specifically documented field observation of the year. This dispatch is making it the second one.
◈ FIELD NOTE · ON SMALL THINGS BEING RIGHT
The MINI is the Sumatra of cars. It doesn't apologize for being what it is. It doesn't need to be larger to be correct. The people who buy them know this. The people who don't buy them don't see it. There is a version of every category — coffee, car, walk, city — where small and dense is correct and the majority market is wrong. The field has no obligation to agree with the majority market. The Sumatra is correct. The MINI is correct. 11 turkeys is a full morning. Filed.
◈ THE WALK ITSELF · WHAT IT CLEARS
There is a category of problem that cannot be solved sitting. Not because sitting is deficient — sitting is fine for most problems. But some configurations of thought require locomotion to resolve. The body needs to be in forward motion before the relevant neural pathways open up. The walk is the work session. The Sumatra is the signal that the session has begun.
5K is the correct distance for this. Too short and you haven't moved long enough for the locomotion to do the processing work. Too long and you've shifted into endurance mode — different physiology, different output. 5K is the sweet spot: approximately 45–55 minutes at a field pace, enough for two or three genuine cognitive resolutions per loop. The Pinole hills add elevation change, which adds resistance, which adds blood flow, which adds clarity.
11 sightings means you're paying attention. It means you're not in your phone. It means the walk was actually a walk and not a podcast delivery mechanism with legs. The turkeys reward presence with presence. They are already there. You just have to show up without your face in a screen and they will appear on a ratio of approximately 2.2 per kilometer, consistently, if the terrain is right.
"Mere seen. 11 of them. On one loop. They didn't look up. Not once. The field is full if you walk it. The Sumatra is load-bearing. 925."

◈ FIVE AXIOMS · ONE WALK
I
The Sumatra is load-bearing. The walk coffee is not optional. It is the signal that the session has started, the thermal anchor that registers morning as intentional rather than accidental. Sumatra specifically because it doesn't apologize. Full body. Volcanic soil. The cup from the caldera of the thing that nearly ended us. That's the correct walk fuel.
II
You are the visitor. They are not confused. 11 wild turkeys on one 5K loop is not a wildlife anomaly. It is successful conservation meeting established territory meeting the correct outcome. The CDFW stocked the hills. The birds reproduced. Their descendants walk routes older than the roads. When they cross the parking lot, they are not wandering. They are commuting. The lot is in their way, not the other way around.
III
Small and dense is a design philosophy, not a compromise. The MINI Cooper Clubman in the lot is the correct object in the incorrect era. Issigonis solved the problem in 1959 and nobody remembers the problem anymore, so the solution keeps getting larger to keep up with the market's amnesia about what the problem was. The car that fits correctly is always the smallest one in the lot.
IV
The walk clears what sitting cannot clear. Not because sitting is wrong. Because certain neural states require locomotion to open. 5K at a field pace, on variable terrain, with a hot Sumatra, early enough that the land hasn't been overrun yet — this is a cognitive work session. The turkeys are the proof the session is calibrated correctly. If you're seeing 2+ per kilometer, you're present. The field rewards presence.
V
The land is alive under the pavement. Pinole is not nature. Pinole is a suburban-adjacent Bay Area city with parking lots and chain-link fences and a Starbucks drive-through 400 meters from where a lone tom stood in the road and refused to move. And yet: 11 turkeys. The hills are still there. The oaks are still there. The restoration worked. The field is full if you walk it. Mere seen. Documented. Filed. 925.
11. ON ONE WALK. SUMATRA IN HAND.
THEY DIDN'T LOOK UP. NOT ONCE.
THE TOBA CALDERA IS IN THE CUP. 74,000 YEARS OF VOLCANIC SOIL.
THE PARKING LOT IS THEIR SHORTCUT. HAS BEEN SINCE BEFORE THE LOT.
THE FIELD IS FULL. WALK IT. 925.
