while sobbing in an attic above a school that doesn't love him.

chosen for the quest without being asked.
goes anyway.
♐ sagittarius doesn't need a reason to cross the world toward something dangerous.
the quest is the reason.
atreyu loses everything on the way:
his horse. his amulet. his certainty.
he arrives at the Southern Oracle without any of it
and keeps going because what else is there to do.
♐ sagittarius is not reckless — sagittarius is relentlessly oriented toward the horizon.
losing things doesn't stop the movement.
it's painful. it moves anyway.
he faces his own reflection in the second gate
— a mirror that shows you your true self and kills you if you're not worthy —
and walks through.
sagittarius always walks through the gate.

the Swamp of Sadness.
neptune rules dissolution, illusion, the things that sink you not through force
but through weight.
artax begins to slow. atreyu tells him to fight the sadness.
artax keeps sinking.
the swamp is not a villain. it has no agenda.
it is just what happens when sadness becomes environment.
when the feeling stops being weather and starts being ground.
neptune 12th house: the hidden suffering. the loss that happens in silence.
no villain responsible. no system to blame.
just the gradual weight of a world
that forgot how to hold up the things it loves.
artax sinks and it will never stop hurting
because it's not a plot point.
it's a portrait.

not a dragon in the classical sense.
no fire. no hoard. no curse.
falkor is pure jupiter.
he shows up when things are the worst.
he catches atreyu mid-fall.
he laughs all the time because luck dragons know something we don't.
♃ jupiter in a chart: the place where things work out.
where you fall and something enormous and white catches you
and says "have courage" in a voice that means it.
atreyu didn't summon him. bastian didn't plan for him.
jupiter doesn't need an invitation.
jupiter shows up when the falling is real enough to matter.
falkor's final scene: flying bastian over the bullies who terrorized him.
♃ jupiter's last word: "what are you going to do now?"
that's the question. that's always the question.

she is not sick because the nothing is destroying Fantasia.
the nothing is destroying Fantasia because she is sick.
she is sick because no one has given her a new name.
she needs a name from a human child who loves the stories.
she has always needed this.

the thing that nourishes you.
the empress's moon requires to be seen. to be named. to be held in someone's attention.
bastian shouts MOON CHILD across the storm.
the world comes back.
the sun and moon in opposition made whole
by a grieving pisces boy in an attic
who finally said the name out loud.

it doesn't want anything.
that's the horror.
a villain wants something. a villain can be reasoned with, defeated, appealed to.
the nothing just expands where imagination used to be.
gmork — the wolf, the servant — explains it to atreyu:
humans are losing their hopes and dreams.
when they do, Fantasia shrinks.
when it's gone, the nothing fills the space.
the nothing is not a cause. it is an absence that became a presence.

♆ neptune rules: dissolution, the dreamworld, what unmoors you.
their conjunction is the nothing.
the end of stories.
the end of the capacity to believe in them.
michael ende wrote this in 1979.
he was watching television replace imagination.
he saw the nothing coming before it had a name.

he chases atreyu across worlds.
