Why they racist?
They made menthols illegal.
The Black community deserves pleasure.
So do we.
They would be racists —
what they care about our lungs all of a sudden.

1950s–2000s: Tobacco companies run hyper-targeted ad campaigns
directly into Black neighborhoods. Newport. Kool. Salem.
Billboards on every block in Oakland, Richmond, Compton.
Radio spots. Sponsorships. Community events. Product placement.
The government watched. The government said nothing.
There was tax revenue in it. They were fine.
2022: California bans menthol cigarettes.
For public health.
Now they're worried.
Now they care about lungs.
Specifically: our lungs. In our neighborhoods. On our blocks.
The same lungs they didn't care about for 70 years
while the product was being pushed by corporations with full government visibility.
The menthol is not more dangerous than a regular cigarette.
That is not the argument.
The argument is: who smokes menthols and who decided to ban them.
Menthols got banned because of who smokes them.
Not what they do. Who.
That's the whole thing. That's the whole roast.
My mom ships Newports to me from Tucson.
She's not worried.
The US government is.
Tucson is HQ2.
The supply line is family.
Neither of us asked for their concern.

Ask anyone who has spent time watching policy dress up as protection
while functioning as control.
This is not new.
The pattern is:
1. Allow or enable harm to a community of color for years, often profiting from it.
2. When the political moment shifts, criminalize the symptom
without addressing the structure that created it.
3. Call it progress. Call it health. Call it protection.
Do not ask the community.
Cesar Chavez organized farmworkers against pesticide use
while the government licensed those same pesticides.
Dolores Huerta stood on the line while the state called it a labor dispute.
The communities targeted by predatory tobacco marketing
were never asked what kind of help they wanted.
They were handed a ban and told to be grateful.
The Black community deserves pleasure.
The same pleasure that Napa Valley wine gets.
The same pleasure that craft beer gets.
The same pleasure that a cigar bar in San Francisco gets with no ban in sight.
One community's vice is artisanal. Another's is illegal.
That's the roast. That's the whole thing.
They would be racists —
what they care about our lungs all of a sudden.
