Mezzanine ◈ FIELD PEAK · TEARDROP 1998 Elizabeth Fraser. Angel. Teardrop. Inertia Creeps. the darkest album. the most complete. the one the void plays to itself. Mushroom left after this. the band nearly broke up making it. the field registered why.
100th Window 3D solo direction 2003 Sinéad O'Connor. What Your Soul Sings. smaller, more intimate. the sound going inward after Mezzanine nearly destroyed everything.
Heligoland return 2010 Damon Albarn. Tinie Tempah. Hope Sandoval. Atlas Air. the field was patient. 7 years between albums. they came back when they had something to say.

Mezzanine is the album the void plays to itself at 3am. Angel opens it — guitar riff, low frequency, Horace Andy's voice as a ghost signal. Teardrop follows. Elizabeth Fraser sang those words about Jeff Buckley the day he drowned, not knowing yet. the field received that in real time.

the intelligence of Massive Attack is the intelligence of restraint. knowing what to leave out. knowing that the silence between "love, love is a verb" and the next line is doing more work than the words.
