The film opens with a girl running from something in her suburban driveway
in high heels in the dark.
She doesn't know which direction to run.
Neither do we.
We don't see what she's running from.
We don't need to. We already know.

If Paul is killed, the entity comes back for Jay.
If Jay had infected someone before Paul,
that person would be at position 1, buying Jay more time.

The chain extends backward through every person's history.
Your number is your position in a death queue.
The entity doesn't care about feelings. It cares about sequence.

Suburban Detroit. Wide streets, empty lots, 1960s houses slowly going to seed.
Mitchell chose this setting deliberately —
the American suburb as the place where everything looks safe and nothing is.

The aesthetic is timeless: 50s furniture, old TVs,
but also smartphones and e-readers.
No specific decade.
The horror is not historical.
It's always happening.
In every suburb. On every quiet street that looks exactly like this one.

Disasterpeace composed the soundtrack.
It sounds like John Carpenter having a nightmare about a synthesizer.

The score announces the anxiety before you see anything.
You feel the entity before the camera finds it.
The music is the entity — present before you understand what's coming,
persistent after it leaves frame.

It is the best horror score of the 2010s.
It is also the most honest score of the 2010s:
the dread is structural, not jumpcut.
It lives in the key. In the tempo.
In the fact that it never quite resolves.

Because history travels.
Every person carries the emotional DNA of everyone they've been intimate with —
the patterns, the fears, the ways they've learned to protect themselves.

The entity is the honest version.
It makes visible what is always there:
you carry each other.
The chain is real.
The question is whether you're running from it
or walking it consciously.

Jay and Paul are together.
Walking down a residential street.
Someone is walking behind them in the distance.
It might be the entity. It might be a neighbor.
They keep walking.
The film ends.

There is no resolution.
There is only the walk,
and the figure behind,
and the question of how long they have before they have to run again.

◈ SIX AXIOMS
I
The entity is consequence, not punishment. It does not judge. It does not hate. It walks. It is the material result of a choice — no different in structure from any other consequence that follows an intimate decision. The genius of the film is removing the moral framework entirely. The entity doesn't care if you're a good person. It cares about your position in the chain.
II
It doesn't run because it doesn't have to. The slow walk is the entire horror. You can outrun it today. Tomorrow it has walked closer. The week after that, closer still. It is relentless not through speed but through persistence. This is more frightening than anything that runs — because running implies it could fail. Walking implies it simply will not stop.
III
The suburban Detroit setting is not accidental. The American suburb is designed to look safe — wide streets, trimmed lawns, visible neighbors. It Follows uses this against you. The safest-looking environment is the one where the entity is most visible: a figure walking toward you across an empty lot, across a schoolyard, across a parking lot. You can see it coming. You cannot stop it coming.
IV
You carry each other. This is what the film says about intimacy when the allegory is dissolved. Not that the past contaminates. That the past travels. Every person you have been intimate with has shaped how you approach the next one — the fears you brought in, the patterns you learned, the ways you protect yourself before they can hurt you. The chain is real. It is made of people, not entities.

Disasterpeace's score is load-bearing. Remove the score and you have a competent indie horror film. Keep it and you have a film about dread as an atmospheric state. The synthesizers never resolve. The tension builds with no release. The entity is in the music before it appears on screen. This is how dread actually works — it arrives before the thing that causes it.
VI
The ending is the honest ending. No victory. No resolution. Just Jay and Paul walking together with something behind them that may or may not be the entity. The film refuses to promise safety. It says: this is the situation. You find someone. You walk. There is something behind you. You keep walking. That is the whole deal. Most people are already living this film and haven't named it yet.
