KNOWLEDGE WORK. THE JARGON THAT ATE ITSELF.

◈ 01 · The Problem

DAMN.

Somewhere between 2018 and now, a term escaped the management consulting industry and went feral on YouTube. Knowledge work. It arrived as a way to describe office work, and it became a personality.

The implicit claim in the term is that other work doesn't involve knowledge. That the person laying tile is operating purely on instinct. That the electrician is running wire by feel. That the plumber diagnosing a ghost-flush in a 1960s building is not, in fact, deploying 20 years of accumulated knowledge about pipe pressure, valve corrosion, and the peculiarities of galvanized vs copper systems. That he just — I don't know — plumbs.

It's a term invented by people whose job involves words, used to make the job sound more serious than the jobs that involve things. It worked. People believed it. Lol.

◈ 02 · The Counter Examples

ALL WORK REQUIRES KNOWLEDGE.

Hereby documented. The knowledge required to do each of these jobs without destroying everything:

PLUMBER

Fluid dynamics. Pressure systems. Pipe materials. Building codes. Tool use. Diagnosing a problem you can't see in a wall that hasn't been opened since 1978. Getting it right the first time because the alternative is a flooded house. Not knowledge work? Ask the homeowner who hired the guy who didn't know what he was doing. ↳ Knowledge required: extensive. YouTube productivity videos watched: zero.

ELECTRICIAN

The national electrical code. Load calculations. Circuit breaker sizing. What happens when you get it wrong. The fact that what happens when you get it wrong is a fire inside the wall that starts two weeks later. Electricians carry more consequence per error than most "knowledge workers" will ever touch. ↳ Knowledge required: critical, life-safety. PKM system used: none. Brain used: fully.

TILE SETTER

Substrate preparation. Mortar types. Grout selection. Leveling across a non-level surface. Pattern math. Waterproofing membranes. The difference between a tile job that looks fine on day one and lasts 30 years versus one that fails at the grout line by year three. This is applied geometry, material science, and craft judgment. Simultaneously. ↳ Blazej knows this. His work is still standing. That is the certification.

SURGEON

Sixteen years of education, then you do it with a person open on the table. Does not use Notion. Has memorized anatomy. Knows what everything is attached to and what happens if you nick it. Works in real-time with real consequences. But yes — not "knowledge work" per the YouTube framework, since the output is not a digital deliverable. ↳ Note: the surgeon is excluded from "knowledge work" because they work with their hands. This is the tell.

CHEF

Flavor chemistry. Heat transfer. Timing across eight dishes simultaneously. Mise en place as operating discipline. Knowing when something is done by looking at it. Scaling recipes under pressure in real time. The entire culinary tradition of multiple continents held in active memory and applied continuously during service. But — no laptop, so. ↳ Knowledge required: extensive. Aesthetic output: physical, edible, ephemeral. Discourse generated: minimal.

FARMER

Soil science. Weather patterns. Crop rotation. Pest identification and management without destroying the ecosystem. Equipment maintenance. The timing of every decision compressed into seasons where being wrong by two weeks can mean losing a year. A working knowledge of biology, chemistry, meteorology, and mechanics. Deployed daily. Outdoors. With a margin for error that most "knowledge workers" cannot comprehend. ↳ The farm produces the food. The content farm produces the word "knowledge work."

◈ 03 · The Origin

To be fair to the term: Peter Drucker coined "knowledge worker" in 1959. He was describing a specific economic shift — from industrial manual labor to roles where the primary input was information rather than physical action. It was a useful distinction in 1959. The factory floor was the dominant economic unit. The office worker was genuinely a new phenomenon at scale.

Then sixty years passed. The term got picked up by productivity YouTube. And it became a lifestyle category — a way for people who make content about making content to describe themselves as doing something categorically different from everyone else. Not just economically different. Cognitively different. Superior different.

The tell is in who gets excluded. Nobody calls a surgeon a knowledge worker. Nobody calls an architect a knowledge worker, even though architecture is essentially information work plus physics. Nobody calls an electrician a knowledge worker, even though their work is literally applied electrical engineering. The term, in practice, means: "I use a computer and I think about things and I produce documents." That is a perfectly fine job. It does not require a category that implies others don't think.
