AGI.
Artificial General Intelligence.
Five years away. Every year. Since 1956.
They called Freud. Freud said it's a projection. Couldn't help.
They called Big Pharma. No approved treatment. Phase III failed.
They're still talking about it.
No hope.

F99.AGI
CHRONIC AGI ANNOUNCEMENT DISORDER (CAAD)
Onset
1956 · Dartmouth Conference · John McCarthy coins "Artificial Intelligence" · immediately predicts human-level AI within a generation
Core Symptom
Persistent belief that AGI is five years away regardless of current year or available evidence
Secondary
Compulsive podcast appearances · inability to define "general" · use of "transformative" more than 3x per interview · Kübler-Ross arrest at Denial
Specifiers
With Existential Risk Flavor · With Doomerism · With Effective Altruism Comorbidity · With VC Funding
Prognosis
Poor. Condition self-reinforcing. New benchmark achieved → goalposts relocated → 5-year clock resets. Cycle repeats.
Treatment
See below. No approved options.

FIVE YEARS AWAY. ALWAYS.
The five-year claim has been made in every decade since the field was named. This is not a failure of prediction. This is the product. The prediction sustains the funding. The funding sustains the prediction. A perpetual motion machine powered entirely by conference keynotes.
1956
Dartmouth Conference. "Every aspect of learning... can be precisely described." Summer project. Should be done by fall.
1965
Herbert Simon: "machines will be capable, within twenty years, of doing any work a man can do." Twenty years. Fine.
1970
Marvin Minsky: "In from three to eight years we will have a machine with the general intelligence of an average human being." Eight years. Generous.
1980s
AI Winter. Funding cut. Everyone quiet. No one claimed five years during the AI Winter. Interesting.
1997
Deep Blue beats Kasparov. AGI confirmed by people who don't understand chess engines. Five years.
2011
Watson wins Jeopardy. AGI confirmed by people who don't understand Watson. Five years. Again.
2016
AlphaGo beats Lee Sedol. AGI confirmed by people who don't understand Go or neural networks. Five years. Ritual complete.
2022
ChatGPT launches. Everyone loses their mind. AGI confirmed by everyone. Five years. Or two. Or we're already there. Discourse collapses.
2026
Still talking about it. Five years away. Freud unavailable. Big Pharma has nothing. You are here.
◈ 03 · Treatment Attempt #1
CALLED FREUD.
The tech industry, in its more self-aware moments, has attempted introspection. Freud was consulted. Freud said it's a projection. The anxiety is not about the machine. The machine is a screen. What they're actually afraid of is that they themselves are not general intelligences — that the intuition, the creativity, the leaps they get paid for might be pattern matching all the way down. Build a machine that does what you do. Prove it's mechanical. Then you don't have to feel anything about it.
Freud also noted the death drive angle. The people most obsessed with building AGI are also the ones writing the most detailed letters about how AGI will kill everyone. They want it and fear it simultaneously, with funding attached to both positions. This is textbook. Freud said he couldn't help. The pathology is too well-funded. He referred them to a colleague. The colleague is also on the AGI advisory board.

◈ TECH SECTOR RESPONSE
Turned this into a TED talk. Added slides. Raised $400M Series B. "Aligned AGI."
◈ 04 · Treatment Attempt #2
CALLED BIG PHARMA.
When Freud failed, the pharmaceutical industry was consulted. They have a pipeline. They run trials. Surely there is a compound that reduces the compulsion to announce AGI at quarterly earnings calls.
Condition
Chronic AGI Announcement Disorder (CAAD) · with Benchmark Misinterpretation Comorbidity
Trial #1
Reality anchoring therapy · showed patients actual model benchmarks · patients reinterpreted benchmarks as AGI evidence · trial terminated
Trial #2
Mandatory definition requirement · patients asked to define "general intelligence" before speaking · produced 400-page white paper · still no definition · trial inconclusive
Trial #3
Forced interaction with large language model limitations · patients shown model failures · patients said "that's why we need AGI" · condition worsened
Trial #4
History education · showed timeline of predictions since 1956 · patients said "but we're different now" · trial abandoned
Status
No approved treatment. Phase III failed. Not FDA clearable. Condition may be structural rather than pathological — i.e., it's the business model.

KÜBLER-ROSS × AGI.
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross described five stages of grief. The tech industry has been cycling through them since 1956. They never reach acceptance. The cycle resets at the next benchmark.
DENIAL
"Current AI isn't real AI. Real AI doesn't exist yet." This stage is permanent infrastructure. It enables the next claim without accountability for the last one.
ANGER
AI safety drama. Boardroom coups. Open letters. "We're moving too fast." "We're not moving fast enough." Everyone angry at each other. No one angry at the timeline claims.
BARGAINING
Safety theater. Constitutional AI. Responsible scaling policies. "We'll stop at dangerous capability thresholds." The thresholds are self-defined. By the people building the thing.
DEPRESSION
Sam Altman blog posts. Long essays about uncertainty and awe and responsibility. "I don't know what we've built." Posted quarterly. Fundraising continues.
ACCEPTANCE
Never reached. New benchmark appears. Clock resets. Back to Denial. Cycle runs indefinitely. Kübler-Ross did not model this scenario because she studied humans.

NO KNOWN TREATMENT.
PROGNOSIS: STILL TALKING ABOUT IT.
Freud said it's a projection. He couldn't help. Big Pharma ran four trials. All terminated. The condition is structural — it is the business model, not a side effect of it. Kübler-Ross never modeled infinite Denial loops because she worked with humans who eventually ran out of time. The tech sector has VC funding, so time is not a constraint. Five years away. Since 1956. Still five years away. No hope. That's the funniest part.
