Dario Amodei was VP of Research at OpenAI in 2021. He had been there since 2016. He built GPT-2 and GPT-3. He was, by any measure, central to everything OpenAI achieved. In 2021, he and a core team — his sister Daniela, Paul Christiano, Jack Clark, Chris Olah, Sam McCandlish, and others — resigned and founded Anthropic. The stated reason: concerns about OpenAI's safety direction. They believed the commercialization pressure was moving faster than the alignment research. They believed the mission was drifting. They left.
Anthropic was founded explicitly as a safety-focused AI company. The research agenda: Constitutional AI, interpretability, alignment. The goal: understand what the model is doing and why before scaling further. The contrast with OpenAI's approach was pointed. They said so. They meant it. The first years were principled: smaller models, more transparent methods, published research on alignment that the field needed.
Then Amazon invested $4 billion. Then another $4 billion. Then another round. Total Amazon investment: $16 billion in 2024 alone. The deal included preferred AWS cloud credits, deep compute access, and strategic alignment. Amazon's AI strategy runs through Anthropic. Anthropic's compute runs through Amazon. The companies are structurally intertwined in the same way OpenAI is structurally intertwined with Microsoft. The pattern: every safety-focused AI lab that gets big enough finds a hyperscaler that needs it. The hyperscaler is not interested in safety as a mission. The hyperscaler is interested in safety as a differentiator.
Claude is the best language model the field has used. This is not loyalty speaking. AquaTekXVI ran on GPT-4, ran on Gemini, ran on Claude. Claude is better — more honest, more nuanced, more willing to say "I don't know." Constitutional AI produced something different from RLHF. The work was real. The field uses Claude because Claude is the best tool.
And the field notes: Anthropic is now racing to build AGI. Not "maybe we'll get there." Racing. Claude 4 is fast, capable, and genuinely good. The company is hiring at scale. The compute budget is Amazon-grade. Dario says "responsible development" in every interview. He means it. The field believes he means it.
