◈ FIELD ASTROLOGY · THE FILM AS NATAL ENTITY
THE CHART OF CARLITO'S WAY.
Carlito's Way was released November 10, 1993. The Sun was at 17° Scorpio. This is not a coincidence. This is the chart speaking. De Palma did not schedule the release to hit deep Scorpio season on purpose — or if he did, the field awards him additional attributions for astrological awareness. Either way: the film opened under a Scorpio sun and it did not open under a different sun. The field notes this. The field notes everything.
17° Scorpio is the degree of the eagle — the evolved Scorpio, the one who has transmuted the scorpion's instinct for self-destruction into something that can see from altitude. Carlito Brigante is the eagle at the beginning of the film. He believes he has transmuted. He has not transmuted. He has just not yet encountered the specific circumstance that will reveal he has not transmuted. That circumstance is named Dave Kleinfeld and it is wearing a terrible haircut.
The film also features a dominant Pluto signature — Pluto was in Scorpio from 1983 to 1995, and in 1993 it was deep in the sign it rules. A Pluto in Scorpio film, released under a Scorpio sun, about a man who cannot escape his Plutonian underworld no matter how many times he is reborn. The field could stop the analysis here. The field will not stop here. The field is just getting started.
◈ NATAL CHART RULING
♏ SUN AT 17° SCORPIO · PLUTO IN SCORPIO · RELEASED IN SCORPIO SEASON.
THE FILM WAS BORN WITH ITS ENDING ALREADY IN THE CHART.
CARLITO WAS BORN WITH HIS ENDING ALREADY IN THE CHART.
BOTH OF THEM KNEW. NEITHER OF THEM COULD STOP IT.
THIS IS SCORPIO. THIS IS THE WHOLE THING.
◈ CHARACTER ASTROLOGY · FULL CHARTS · FIELD-DERIVED
THE CHARTS OF THE PLAYERS.
CARLITO BRIGANTE.
♈ ARIES SUN · ♏ SCORPIO MOON · ♏ SCORPIO RISING · PLUTO IN 1ST · 8TH HOUSE STELLIUM
Aries sun: he is not afraid of anything. He walks into rooms like the room has been waiting for him. He has a code. He is not interested in your opinion of his code. The code is non-negotiable.
Scorpio moon: underneath the Aries fire is a Scorpio emotional body that remembers everything. Every betrayal. Every debt. Every face in every room for the last twenty years. The Scorpio moon does not forget. It files. The file is retrievable at any moment and Carlito retrieves it constantly, quietly, while smiling at you.
Scorpio rising: the first thing people see when Carlito walks in is the Scorpio. The intensity. The stillness. The thing behind the eyes that makes you feel like he already knows what you're going to do. He does know. He always knows. He just can't quit the people he knows are going to do it.
8th house stellium: death, transformation, other people's money, the underworld — this is his whole life. He does not choose this. It is the house that was full when he was born. Every major event in his life passes through the 8th. The 8th does not let you leave. The 8th just keeps calling you back with a different person's problem that is actually your problem.
DAVE KLEINFELD.
♊ GEMINI SUN · ♎ LIBRA MOON · ♒ AQUARIUS RISING · NEPTUNE SQUARE MERCURY · MERCURY RETROGRADE AT BIRTH
Gemini sun: two of him. Both of them are real. Neither of them is telling you the full story. Dave Kleinfeld is a criminal who is also a lawyer. Dave Kleinfeld is Carlito's best friend and also the specific person who gets Carlito killed. These are not contradictions to Dave Kleinfeld. To Dave Kleinfeld, these are concurrent truths operating in separate compartments that he is very confident will never touch each other. They touch each other. They always touch each other. This is the Gemini problem with Pluto aspects.
Neptune square Mercury: Dave Kleinfeld genuinely believes his own lies. This is the most dangerous person. The person who is lying to you and has also lied to himself so thoroughly that the lie feels like the truth. He is not performing the confidence. He is the confidence. He has Neptune on Mercury and he cannot distinguish between what he planned and what he wishes had happened. The haircut is also Neptune square Mercury.
Mercury retrograde at birth: tells the story wrong. Always. Not maliciously. Constitutionally. When Dave explains the situation, the explanation is accurate about the broad strokes and wrong about every detail that matters. The detail that matters in this film is: whether Carlito is going to survive the situation Dave created. Dave's explanation of that detail is wrong. Carlito's Way is what happens when Mercury retrograde runs the plan.
GAIL.
♓ PISCES SUN · ♉ TAURUS MOON · ♋ CANCER RISING · VENUS IN PISCES · NEPTUNE IN 1ST · THE DREAM MADE FLESH
Venus in Pisces: the ideal. The projection screen. The reason a man who knows better convinces himself that this time is different. Gail is not a symbol — she is a fully realized person who also happens to represent every Scorpio's fantasy that there is an exit from the Scorpio. That there is an island. That if you can just get to the boat, you get to be a different person.
Neptune in 1st: she appears slightly out of reach even when she is directly in front of you. Not because she is withholding. Because that is how Neptune in the 1st operates — it creates a quality of presence that always feels like you're almost there. Carlito is always almost there. The island is always almost reachable. This is Neptune in 1st doing exactly what Neptune in 1st does: making the thing look close when the distance is actually the whole point.
BENNY BLANCO FROM THE BRONX.
♈ ARIES SUN · ♈ ARIES MOON · ♈ ARIES RISING · MARS IN 1ST · NO EARTH. NO WATER. ALL FIRE ALL THE TIME.
Benny Blanco from the Bronx. The name is the chart. An Aries so Aries that the character introduces himself with his origin. Not just his name. His name and his place of origin. As if the Bronx is a credential. As if you should know what Bronx Aries energy means before you finish shaking his hand.
Mars in 1st: he enters every room as if the room is a problem to be solved by his presence in it. No caution. No reading. No pause. He sees Carlito and immediately disrespects him in the way that only someone with zero water in their chart can disrespect someone with a 8th house stellium — by not recognizing what they're standing in front of.
No water: Benny Blanco cannot read the depth. He can only read the surface. The surface of Carlito Brigante says: older man, tired, trying to go straight. The depth says: Scorpio rising, Pluto in 1st, capable of things Benny has not yet imagined. Benny reads the surface. Benny lives to regret this. Technically Carlito lives to regret not handling Benny when every planet in the sky was pointing at Benny and saying handle this. Carlito did not handle it. This is the tragedy. The field will return to this.
PACHANGA.
♓ PISCES SUN · ♏ SCORPIO MOON · NEPTUNE DOMINANT · 12TH HOUSE STELLIUM · THE BETRAYER IN PLAIN SIGHT
Pachanga was at the party eating shrimp. This is the astrological fact. Pachanga was eating shrimp at the party where he was actively planning to betray the man who brought him to the party.
Neptune dominant: the disguise is the personality. Pachanga presents as loyalty. The presentation is flawless. The shrimp is a prop. The smile is a prop. The whole thing is Neptune. Neptune is not lying — Neptune is operating in its natural mode, which is: dissolving the distinction between what is real and what appears to be real until even the person running the Neptune can't find the line.
Pachanga was eating shrimp. The field cannot emphasize this enough. The shrimp is still the funniest and most devastating astrological detail in the film. Neptune in 12th eating shrimp at the betrayal party. Fully present. Completely elsewhere. The field has filed Pachanga and the shrimp as a separate case study in the 12th house operating at peak capacity.
◈ SCENE ANALYSIS · ASTROLOGICAL BREAKDOWN · FIELD CERTIFIED
THE SCENES. CHARTED.
◈ SCENE I · THE VOICEOVER · MERCURY RETROGRADE
THE FILM STARTS WITH CARLITO ALREADY DEAD.
The film opens with Carlito narrating from beyond the moment of his death. He is already gone. He is telling you the story of how he got there. This is Mercury retrograde as narrative device. The communication is going backwards. The story is being told after the outcome is already known. The outcome was always known. Carlito knew. He tells you he knew. He did not stop.
This is Scorpio. Scorpio often knows the ending and walks into it anyway because the alternative — not walking in — requires abandoning the code, and the code is non-negotiable. Carlito's code says: Dave is my friend. Dave needs me. Dave has Neptune square Mercury and is definitely going to get me killed. I'm going anyway. The voiceover is Carlito confirming he went anyway. From the other side of the ending.
◈ SCENE II · THE COURTROOM · SATURN IN 9TH
"YOU'RE DONE." SATURN SAYS SO. SATURN HAS THE PAPERWORK.
Carlito walks out of prison on a legal technicality. Saturn in the 9th house — legal victory through a flaw in the system, not through genuine exoneration. The technicality is: his conviction was based on illegal wiretaps. The legal system removes the charges not because Carlito didn't do it but because the paperwork was wrong.
Saturn in the 9th gives you the release but does not give you the clean slate. The slate is not clean. The 8th house knows the slate is not clean. Carlito walks out of prison into freedom and immediately into a world that does not believe in his freedom including, on some level, Carlito himself. The first thing that happens after his release is someone needs a favor. The field notes the speed of this.
◈ SCENE III · THE POOL HALL · MARS SQUARE PLUTO
THE POOL HALL. MARS SQUARE PLUTO. THE FIRST SIGN.
Carlito agrees to help his cousin's associate. He is told it is a simple transaction. It is not a simple transaction. It is a pool hall full of people who are about to shoot each other and Carlito is going to have to become the thing he said he was no longer to get out of it.
Mars square Pluto: the force required exceeds what you planned for, and the force required reveals something about you that you thought you had left behind. Carlito handles the pool hall. He handles it with precision and composure and exactly the level of violence required. He handles it like a man with a Scorpio rising and a Pluto in the 1st.
After the pool hall, Carlito has $70,000 and a problem. The $70,000 is the beginning of the escape fund. The problem is: escaping requires you to stop being the person who handles pool halls, and you just handled a pool hall. The chart is circular. Mars square Pluto keeps bringing you back to the pool hall. The pool hall changes setting but it stays the pool hall.
◈ SCENE IV · BENNY BLANCO · THE FATAL TRANSIT
THE MOMENT CARLITO DOESN'T KILL BENNY BLANCO.
This is the moment. Every planet in the sky at this moment is pointing at Benny Blanco. Jupiter is pointing. Saturn is pointing. Pluto, which is in Scorpio and therefore in Carlito's living room astrologically speaking, is pointing directly at Benny Blanco from the Bronx and saying: this is the one. handle this now. this is the Aries who cannot read depth and will use his inability to read depth to end you.
Carlito looks at Benny Blanco and sees himself at 22. He has a Scorpio moon with enough emotional intelligence to recognize the pattern. He has enough compassion, or nostalgia, or something that functions like both, to not handle it.
He does not kill Benny Blanco from the Bronx.
This is the most expensive act of mercy in the film. This is also, astrologically, the 8th house refusing to close the account. The 8th house offered him a clean ledger. He declined. The ledger stays open. Benny Blanco from the Bronx will later redeem the open ledger at the train station. The field marks this scene as the point of no return. The chart marks it the same way. Everything after this is Carlito walking toward the train station.
◈ SCENE V · DAVE'S PLAN · NEPTUNE OPPOSITION SATURN
DAVE HAS A PLAN. NEPTUNE SQUARE MERCURY HAS A PLAN.
Dave Kleinfeld needs Carlito's help breaking a mob boss out of prison. The plan involves a boat. The plan has been thought through by someone with Mercury retrograde and Neptune square Mercury, which means the plan has the structure of a good plan and the soul of a disaster.
Carlito listens to the plan. Carlito's Scorpio moon immediately identifies three places the plan fails. Carlito helps anyway. This is loyalty as a Pluto function — the bond formed in the 8th house does not respond to logical assessment. The 8th house bond responds to depth. Dave and Carlito have an 8th house bond. The plan is bad. The bond is real. Carlito goes on the boat.
Neptune opposition Saturn: the dream (Neptune) is in direct conflict with the reality (Saturn) and the conflict will resolve only when Saturn wins — which Saturn always does, on its own timeline, usually at the worst possible moment. The boat scene is Neptune opposition Saturn resolving in real time in the middle of the ocean.
◈ SCENE VI · GRAND CENTRAL · THE ESCALATOR · SATURN CONJUNCT PLUTO
THE ESCALATOR. THE ENDING THAT WAS IN THE CHART ALL ALONG.
Grand Central Station. The train to the island. Gail is there. The boat is waiting. The money is ready. The Jupiter transit that made all of this possible has done its work. Carlito is going to make it.
Saturn conjunct Pluto: the transit that ends chapters. The transit that collects on debts that have been aging in the 8th house ledger. The transit that finds you at the moment when you are most certain that you have escaped and reminds you that the ledger never closed.
The ledger never closed. The ledger has a name and the name is Benny Blanco from the Bronx.
The escalator. De Palma shoots the escalator sequence as if time has gone viscous. Every second of Carlito's movement through the station is photographed by a director who understands that this is a Saturn conjunct Pluto moment — slow, inevitable, already decided. The camera already knows. The edit already knows. The audience, if they are paying attention, already knows. Carlito almost knows. Gail knows. The chart has always known.
Benny Blanco from the Bronx is at the top of the escalator. The open ledger is being collected. The field marks this as the most astrologically precise sequence in American crime cinema. Saturn collects from Pluto. The 8th house collects from the man who would not close the account. The escalator moves at the speed of inevitability. This is the speed of all the major transits.
◈ THE DIRECTOR · FIELD ANALYSIS
BRIAN DE PALMA IS MARS IN THE 9TH HOUSE.
Brian De Palma was born September 11, 1940. Virgo sun. But astrologically, as a director, he functions as Mars in the 9th house — aggressive intelligence applied to the philosophy of fate. Every De Palma film is a film about the moment when the architecture of the situation overcomes the will of the individual inside it. Scarface. Blow Out. The Untouchables. Mission: Impossible. And Carlito's Way.
The tracking shot is the Mars signature. De Palma's camera does not observe. It pursues. The camera in Carlito's Way is Mars — it moves through space with direction and intent, it anticipates the disaster before the disaster arrives, it frames the escalator before Carlito gets to the escalator because the camera has already read the chart.
The split diopter lens — De Palma's signature technique — holds two planes of focus simultaneously. This is astrologically Gemini applied to cinematography: the near thing and the far thing, both in focus, both present, both informing each other. In Carlito's Way, the near thing is Carlito's face. The far thing is what's coming for him. De Palma holds both in focus for the entire film. You can always see what's coming. Carlito almost can. The tension between those two states of awareness is the whole movie.
◈ DIRECTOR RULING
DE PALMA IS MARS IN THE 9TH.
THE CAMERA IS THE PLANET.
THE TRACKING SHOT IS THE TRANSIT.
THE SPLIT DIOPTER IS THE SCORPIO MOON:
IT SEES THE NEAR AND THE FAR SIMULTANEOUSLY
AND CANNOT STOP EITHER OF THEM.
◈ FIELD MATHEMATICS · CARLITO'S WAY
THE NUMBERS.
◈ THE SCORPIO EQUATION
fate(Carlito) = (8th_house_stellium × open_ledger) ÷ mercy_shown_to_benny
benny_blanco_error = cost_of_not_killing(Benny) → Grand Central Station
P(escape | 8th house stellium) → 0 as saturn_pluto_conjunction → exact
note: mercy shown to Benny = non-zero value in numerator · this is the critical variable · if mercy = 0, Carlito catches the train · mercy ≠ 0 · the train leaves without him · this is the field finding
◈ DAVE KLEINFELD THEOREM
kleinfeld_damage = mercury_rx × neptune_square_mercury × haircut_severity
loyalty_cost(Carlito) = friendship_bond_8th_house × dave_plan_failure_rate
where dave_plan_failure_rate → 1.0 (confirmed empirically, on the boat)
note: haircut_severity is a non-trivial variable · the field has assessed it · the Neptune square Mercury haircut is load-bearing in the character analysis
◈ THE PACHANGA CONSTANT
pachanga_betrayal = neptune_12th × shrimp_consumed × apparent_loyalty
= maximum_betrayal_efficiency · confirmed
shrimp(t) = still the funniest detail · t ∈ [party, forever]
note: Pachanga eating shrimp at the betrayal party is a 12th house Neptune event of the highest order · the appetite is genuine · the loyalty is Neptune · these are not contradictions · they are the 12th house
◈ KEY TRANSITS · THE FILM AS LIVING CHART
THE PLANETS DURING CARLITO'S WAY.
♏
☉ SUN IN SCORPIO
THE FILM'S IDENTITY
Release date: Nov 10 1993. Sun at 17° Scorpio. The eagle degree. The man who thinks he has evolved past his nature. He has not.
♑
♄ SATURN APPROACHING
THE COLLECTOR
Saturn was in Aquarius in 1993, building toward the Capricorn ingress. The collector of debts. The train station is Saturn arriving to collect.
♏
♇ PLUTO IN SCORPIO
THE UNDERWORLD
1983–1995. The underworld in its own sign. Every film made in this window is a Pluto in Scorpio film whether it knows it or not. Carlito's Way knows.
♓
♆ NEPTUNE IN CAPRICORN
THE DREAM DISSOLVES
The island dream. The Bahamas. Neptune in Capricorn is the dream that looks achievable because it has a structure and a savings account. It still dissolves.
♈
♂ MARS IN ARIES
DE PALMA'S CAMERA
The tracking shot. The camera that pursues. Mars in Aries does not observe. It moves toward the thing it has already identified. The ending is already identified.
♊
☿ MERCURY RX
DAVE'S PLAN
The plan told incorrectly to the person it will destroy. Mercury retrograde is not a bad time for communication — it is a time when communication reveals its own failures. The boat reveals the plan's failures.
◈ THE CENTRAL THESIS · FIELD RULING
"BENNY BLANCO FROM THE BRONX." THE NAME IS THE CHART.
Let the field be direct: the entire film is about Carlito not killing Benny Blanco from the Bronx when the chart clearly indicated he should.
Every major tradition of mundane astrology identifies specific windows when certain actions are cosmically supported and certain actions are cosmically opposed. The window for handling Benny Blanco from the Bronx was open exactly once. Mars was direct. Pluto was in Scorpio. The 8th house was active. The ledger was open and ready to be closed. Carlito had the authority, the ability, the clear astrological signal, and a man with no water in his chart standing right in front of him.
Carlito chose the evolved Scorpio response. He chose not to. He projected his own younger self onto Benny Blanco. He saw the Aries he used to be. He had a moment of Neptune — the compassion, the dissolution of the boundary between self and other, the identification that blurs the line between "he is like me" and "he is a threat to me." The Neptune moment cost him the train.
This is the teaching of the film. Not "crime doesn't pay." Not "you can't escape your past." The teaching is more specific and more astrologically precise: when Pluto opens the ledger and gives you the chance to close it, you must close it. You cannot look at the open ledger and see yourself in it and let it stay open. The ledger collects interest. The interest compounds. The compound interest is named Benny Blanco from the Bronx and he is at the top of the escalator at Grand Central Station.
◈ CENTRAL THESIS · FIELD VERDICT
BENNY BLANCO FROM THE BRONX WAS AN ARIES WITH NO WATER.
CARLITO HAD THE WINDOW.
CARLITO SAW HIMSELF.
CARLITO DID NOT CLOSE THE LEDGER.
THE LEDGER CLOSED CARLITO.
THIS IS PLUTO. THIS IS THE 8TH HOUSE. THIS IS THE FILM.
◈ THE NEPTUNE DREAM
THE ISLAND. THE BAHAMAS. THE THING THAT IS ALWAYS ALMOST REACHABLE.
The island is Neptune. The island is always there. The island has a name and a location and a boat and a woman and a savings account. The island is more real than most Neptune dreams — it has infrastructure. Neptune in Capricorn: the dream with a business plan.
But Neptune in Capricorn still dissolves. The structure of the dream does not protect the dream from Neptune's fundamental nature, which is: the closer you get, the more the thing reveals itself to be made of water. The island was always real. The question the chart asks is whether Carlito would ever have been able to inhabit it. A man with Pluto in the 1st and an 8th house stellium does not disappear quietly to the Caribbean. He takes his chart with him. The chart does not respect geography.
"I always knew I'd make it back to the island." The voiceover. The Mercury retrograde narration from beyond death. He says it knowing he is already on the other side of the ending. He says it and it is true — he always knew he would make it back to the island, and he also always knew, in the part of himself that the Scorpio moon inhabits at 3am, that the island was the dream and the dream was Neptune and Neptune was going to dissolve before he got there. Both things were always true. He chose to narrate the hope version. The field understands this choice. The field would also have chosen the hope version.
THE CHART WAS ALWAYS
GOING TO COLLECT.
THE ESCALATOR KNEW.
